Coding Services—MCA/NFDC

MCA logoAre you considering coding your boat in order to generate income whilst you are not using it? With the resurgence of the charter business and with city firms having larger corporate event budgets, now is a great time to start chartering your vessel to help with the running costs. Coding your boat can be a time-consuming and detailed task MJ9 we are on hand to undertake all the different aspects from arranging the survey to purchasing and installing all the safety equipment.

Boats can be coded to the MCA code or to the local NFDC code. These codes are very similar in the respect of the safety equipment required but the NFDC code is restricted in the operating area of the charter boat.

All UK vessels operating commercially under the British Flag or in British Waters are required by law to comply with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Small Commercial Vessel and Pilot Boat Code. All boats under 24 metres (78feet) in length that are in commercial use need to be coded. These include:

  • Charter boats (both sail and power)
  • RIBs
  • Commercial Fishing and Dive boats
  • Workboats
  • Pilot Boats

How MJ9 can help

  • Organise paperwork
  • Prepare the Boat for inspection & survey (MCA & NFDC coding)
  • Arrange for survey to be carried out and attend the survey
  • Carry out any remedial work & purchase any safety equipment required
  • Carry out annual checks to ensure the boat still meets requirements

How much will it cost?

This will depend of a few variables:

  • Which coding you go for
  • How much safety equipment you need
  • How much safety equipment needs to be fitted to the boat

We will attend the survey when it takes place (usually around 2 hours) at £25 per hour and liaise with the surveyor afterwards to compile a report of the items required to be purchased and fitted to pass the survey.
